Basic Crochet Stitches

1. Chain Stitch (ch) Twist the thread around the hook once to form a loop. Twist the thread around the hook once and draw it through the first loop. This forms one chain.Repeat as many times as desired for a long chain.

2. Slip Stitch (sl st) With one loop on the hook, insert the hook in the stitch as instructed in the pattern, pull the working thread through this stitch and the loop on the hook. This is a slip stitch.

3. Double Crochet (dc) With one loop on the hook, insert the hook in the stitch as directed in the pattern. Draw the working thread through this stitch so that there are two loops on the hook. Draw the working thread through these two loops in one motion. This is a double crochet.

4. Treble Crochet (tr) With one loop on the hook, twist the working thread around the hook abd then insert it into the stitch as instructed in the pattern. Pull the working thread through this stitch so that there are three loops on the hook. Pull the working thread through two of these loops then again through the remaining two loops. This is a treble crochet.

5. Double Treble Crochet (d tr) With one loop on the hook, twist the working thread around the hook two times and then insert it in the stitch as directed in the pattern. Pull the working thread through this stitch so that there are four loops on the hook. Pull the working thread through two of these loops, then another two and then the final two. This is a double treble.

6. Triple Treble Crochet (tr tr) With one loop on the hook, twist the thread around the hook three times and then insert the hook into the stitch as directed in the pattern. Pull the working thread through this stitch so that there are five loops on the hook. Pull the working thread through two of these loops, then another two, and another two and then the final two. This is a triple treble.

7. Half Treble Crochet (h tr) With one loop on the hook, twist the thread around the hook one time and insert the hook into the stitch as directed in the pattern. Pull the working thread through this stitch and one of the loops, leaving two loops on the hook. * Twist the thread over the hook and insert the hook in the next stitch. Pull the working thread through two loops, leaving three loops on the hook. Repeat from * leaving four loops on the hook. Pull the working thread through these four hoops in one motion to complete the Half treble.

8. Picot (p) Make a chain of either 3 or 5 chain stitches. Make a slip stitch back into the first chain. This is a picot.
